Metabolic Syndrome (SM) is associated with subsequent diabetes and cardiovascular events. An overproduction of cytokines could be involved in the onset of early inflammation state in MS and cardiovascular disease. The 174G/C SNP of IL-6 has been related with elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in humans and could represent a marker to identify individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We examined if the -174 G/C IL-6 genetic polymorphism is associated with MS ocurrence in a cohort of hypertensive patients.
